Known by many in the region as the ‘Las Vegas of the Middle East’, it is full of the same glitz and glamour as the popular American destination just minus the gambling. Yet there are plenty of ways to spend your money in this vibrant city literally raised from the sands of the desert. Dust off your passport and pack some sunscreen.
#1 the MUST see…The world’s current tallest building; the Burj Khalifa. Standing at a astounding 160 stories tall, people at the top floors literally have the clouds at their feet. Two different observation decks at floors 125 and 148. Highly recommend to book tickets online as lines do get rather long quickly. Don’t worry about buying a day or two in advance either as bad weather is rare most of the year.
#2 the MUST eat…There are so many restaurants in this huge city that picking just one is almost an impossible task, but if you truly want to taste the flavors of the region you must try Al Mallah. They have multiple branches around the city and their huge neon green lights are hard to miss. Definitely try their shawarma.
#3 the MUST shop…For a special souvenir, clothing, perfumes, or something shiny; grab a taxi and head down to the Gold Souk in Deira neighborhood. It has just about everything, but sharpen up your haggling skill as the first price you hear is not the final rice you should pay. http://www.goldsouks.com/dubai/index.php
#4 the MUST stay…The One&Only Royal Mirage is one of the absolute best places to stay and pamper yourself. They have an excellent spa and private beach. Plus you are a short drive from the Dubai Marina are which has a lively night life scene along the new hotspot to ‘be seen’ at JBR Walk. If you don’t prefer the crowd just stay back and have a sit in their traditional style Courtyard with cushion seating and perhaps try some ‘hubbly bubbly’ known as shisha.
#5 the MUST do off the beaten path…three words: Overnight Desert Safari. After a couple days in this grand city, why not break away from the hustle and bustle of the city lights and camp overnight under the stars as you dine on Arabic cuisine, watch a belly dancer, and sip on hot tea. Truly a experience to be had!
